While it is not disputed that an important cause of sports injuries reflects the amount of body contact permitted, the condition of the playing surface and the nature of the equipment used, it is likely that factors within the participant will also influence the likelihood of injury. Kerr and Fowler (1988) talk of 'external' factors and 'internal' factors and have indicated that, despite improvements in coaching, safer equipment and better medical care for athletes, the incidence of sport injury is increasing. Le/win (1989), the physiotherapist at Arsenal Football Club, reported that over the course of a full Football League season, 91% of the players received an injury, with most occurring during matches. A fifth of the injuries were serious with a recovery time of at least one month. It is probably an over-simplification to describe the internal factors as merely the 'effects of pressure' or the 'presence of stress', but there seems to be little doubt that an athlete's psychological state before, at the time of, and after injury, would benefit from close investigation.
