It is important for physiotherapists to have a full understanding of the situation of carers. Their expertise and knowledge should be respected and their needs and limitations accepted without making moral judgements. Hicks (1988) gives many examples of carers who have found the help and support of professionals invaluable. Finkelstein's view (1990) that 'care' is frequently only necessary because disability is individualized, rather than being viewed as a product of society, should be considered and the physiotherapist should attempt, in full consultation and collaboration with the disabled person, those assisting him or her and others involved, to reduce disability by the provision of suitable aids, appliances and adaptations. A broad knowledge and understanding of where to refer the disabled person and who to contact for help and advice, as well as the ability to work collaboratively, is vital. Beardshaw (1988) believes that a major change in the balance of power from professional to client needs to take place before any real progress can be made and that 'partnership' approaches between professionals and disabled people have achieved nothing of significance.
Physiotherapists may wish to join one of the many self-help and pressure groups concerned with improving the quality of life for ill and disabled people and their carers. They are also in a good position to inform and educate the general public as well as fellow professionals, by radio and television appearances, journal and newspaper articles, running courses in schools and colleges and taking part in relevant campaigns.
