ADMINISTERING MEDICATION CORRECTLY: EYE DROPS AND EYE OINTMENTS
Before administering eye drops or ointments, wash your hands. Then lie down or sit down and tilt your head back. Using your thumb and forefinger, gently and carefully pull your lower eyelid down to form a pouch.
If you're applying eye drops, lay your second finger alongside your nose near the inside corner of your eye and apply gentle pressure to your nose. This will close off a duct that drains fluid from the eye. If you don't close off this duct, the drops are likely to drain away too soon. Hold the dropper close to the eyelid without touching it. Place the prescribed number of drops into the pouch. Do not place the drops directly on the eyeball; you may blink and lose the medication. Close your eye and keep it shut for a few moments. Do not wash or wipe the dropper before replacing it in the bottle. Tightly close the bottle to keep out moisture.
To administer an ointment to the eye, squeeze a one-quarter to one-half inch line of ointment into the pouch (formed in the same manner as for administering eye drops) and close your eye. Roll your eye a few times to spread the ointment. As long as you do not squeeze the ointment directly onto the eyeball, you should feel no stinging or pain.
Be sure the drops or ointments you use are intended for the eye (manufacturers must sterilize all products intended for use in the eye). Also, check the expiration date of the drug on the label or container. Do not use a drug product after that date, and never use any eye product that has changed color. If you find that the medication contains particles that weren't there when you bought it, do not use it.
