In late 1992, an NIH team reported results of a small study (only ten patients) employing oral cyclophosphamide to treat active kidney inflammation. The therapy seemed to be effective and relatively well tolerated, and the researchers concluded that it might be a reasonable alternative to corticosteroids.
The powerful immunosuppressants do have side effects, ranging from slight to severe. Since their prime action is suppression of the immune system, they lower resistance to infection. Serious effects are more likely with intravenous administration, but infections termed "minor" did occur in the oral-cyclophosphamide study mentioned above, with one patient developing shingles, another cellulitis, and a third a urinary-tract infection.
Among other documented consequences: gastrointestinal,, disturbances, hair loss, hepatitis, bone-marrow suppression with resultant anemia, oral Candida infection (" thrush"), sterility, hemorrhagic cystitis (bladder inflammation with bleeding) and, uncommonly, certain cancers.
