EILEEN’S PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF LUPUS
Eileen was just twenty when she had a rather rude shock: "I had slept with exactly one person, and I was diagnosed as having syphilis in a routine screening test. In fact, I was treated for syphilis. I know now that was probably a false-positive test. Every once in a while, over the next ten years, I'd run low-grade fevers and feel kind of draggy, but my internist would say, 'Oh, it's just a virus; don't worry about it.'"
"Once," she recalls, "when I was about twenty-four—I was still living in Los Angeles, where I grew up [she's now an Oregonian]—one evening I was sitting in a movie theater, and my knees started to hurt. Later that night, I woke up and I couldn't move a single one of my joints; I had to call my parents to come across town and take me out of my apartment. I took a lot of aspirin, and it went away in about three days. Then it happened again a few days later. I'd been taking a sulfa drug for a bladder infection, and I finally realized I was allergic to it."
People with lupus do seem to have a higher prevalence of allergies—to drugs as well as other substances—than people in general. The sudden joint problem Eileen describes is medically termed acute polyarthritis—inflammation of many joints. It can be precipitated under many conditions, and hypersensitivity to sulfa is indeed one of them.
Interestingly, it was neither this symptom nor any other, but still another routine test, that led to Eileen's diagnosis of lupus.
