THE DIFFERENT WAYS YOU CAN TAKE HRT
1, Oral Oestrogen and Progesterone (Hormone Tablets)
The most widely used and best known form of HRT is the oral or tablet form and most research into HRT have been done using this form. Most menopausal women are happy to take tablet forms of oestrogen and progesterone on a cyclical basis, much in the same fashion that the oral contraceptive pill is taken. There are many different time and dosage schedules by which hormone tablets can be given. The most important point is that if oestrogen is prescribed to a woman who still has a uterus, progesterone — the other female sex hormone — must also be taken for at least twelve days of every calendar month. This will ensure a regular menstrual bleed and greatly reduce your risk of cancer of the uterus, so that you will have less chance of this cancer than a woman who does not receive HRT. Oestrogen tablets can be taken once or twice daily for twenty-one or twenty-five days with a five-day break between courses, with progesterone tablets being given for the last twelve days of the course.
Your menstrual bleeding will usually occur during the five-day break from the oestrogen tablets. Some women feel better having a five-day break from oestrogen but if you don't, then there is no harm in taking oestrogen every day. In fact, taking oestrogen every day is safer for your bones and blood vessels and is free of risk provided you add in your progesterone tablets for at least 12 days of each calendar month.
