ALLERGY AND DRUG THERAPY
Drugs can be invaluable in treating reactions and people often have to take them for long periods to control severe symptoms. Some drugs have relatively few side effects, but others are potent and can have serious side effects. Avoidance of things which cause your reactions can mean in some cases that you no longer need drug treatment. For other people, particularly severe asthmatics, drugs may still be necessary even with strict avoidance, but the dosage required is usually much less and you are much more in control of your situation.
If you are chemically sensitive or food sensitive, you may perhaps have problems with excipients (e.g. colourings, sweetenings, grains, powders) with which drugs are formulated. Consult your doctor for the least troublesome form of drug.
The various types of drugs which can be used in treatment are:
• Anti-histamines
• Sodium cromoglycate
• Decongestants
• Steroids
• Bronchodilators and anti-cholinergics *409\117\8*
